How to actually show up in "near me" searches
Type “near me” after almost any trade and Google shows a little map with three businesses pinned on it, above everything else. Those three get the lion’s share of the calls. Everyone else is a scroll away, which may as well be invisible.
So how do you become one of the three? It isn’t luck, and it isn’t about paying Google. It comes down to a handful of things you can actually influence. Here they are.
Your Google Business Profile does the heavy lifting
Those map results come from Google Business Profiles, not websites. A complete, accurate profile — right category, right area, opening hours, photos, services all filled in — is the single biggest factor in whether you appear. Most businesses half-fill theirs and wonder why they’re nowhere. Fill yours in properly and you’re already ahead of most local rivals.
Reviews tip the balance
When Google is choosing between similar businesses, reviews are a big part of the tiebreak — how many you have, how recent they are, and whether you reply to them. Steadily earning genuine reviews doesn’t just reassure customers; it nudges you up the map itself.
Your website has to back it up
Google cross-checks your profile against your website. If your site clearly says what you do and where you do it — and your name, address and phone number match your profile exactly — that consistency builds trust and helps you rank. Mismatched or missing details quietly hold you back.
Being genuinely local counts
Google favours businesses that are actually near the person searching, and that are clearly rooted in the area — mentions of the towns you serve, local content, links from local sources. You can’t fake being local, which is exactly why it works in favour of real local businesses like yours.
It builds over time, not overnight
“Near me” ranking rewards consistency — a profile kept up to date, reviews coming in, a site that stays current. It’s a steady climb, not a switch you flip. But once you’re in that map pack for your trade and town, the calls follow.
Getting there is a big part of what we do for the local businesses we work with — if you’re not showing up for the “near me” searches that matter to you, that’s a fixable problem, and a good place to start.
